Business class flights to Italy

One country, two gateways, five carriers. Italy is a buyer's market in disguise.

Business class flights to Italy from the US start around $2,600 round-trip through negotiated fares, versus $4,400-$8,500 published. United, Delta, American, ITA Airways and even Emirates compete across Rome and Milan, and the corridor's hard seasonality means winter buyers routinely pay less than half the summer price.

The advisor playbook

How we buy Italy premium fares

Rome has the broadest schedule: ITA Airways, now part of the Lufthansa Group and newly in Star Alliance, flies nonstop from eight US gateways, Houston the newest, in a 1-2-1 all-aisle-access cabin, with United, Delta and American piling in seasonally from their hubs. Milan's wildcard is Emirates' JFK fifth-freedom nonstop: Gulf-standard business class on a transatlantic hop.

Venice and Naples get their own US nonstops, but only roughly May through October, from New York, Newark, Philadelphia and Dallas depending on the city. In winter those routes stop and the play becomes a connection over Rome, Milan or a European hub, which is often cheaper anyway.

Advisor plays: November through March, outside the Christmas weeks, is the consistent fare floor, often 40% below summer. Open-jaw construction, into Milan and home from Rome or Venice, is usually free on negotiated contracts and saves a backtrack. One-stops on TAP via Lisbon, Iberia via Madrid or Turkish via Istanbul regularly beat the summer nonstops by $1,000 or more.

Flying to Italy, answered

How much is business class to Italy?

Published business fares from the US to Italy run $4,400-$8,500 round-trip. FlyBusinessClass negotiated fares typically fall between $2,600 and $4,500, with winter departures and one-stop routings via Lisbon, Madrid or Istanbul frequently below $2,800.

Which airlines fly business class nonstop from the US to Italy?

ITA Airways flies to Rome from eight US gateways including New York, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Chicago and Houston; United, Delta and American add seasonal nonstops to Rome, Milan, Venice and Naples; and Emirates flies a fifth-freedom JFK-Milan nonstop with its long-haul business cabin.

Should I fly into Rome or Milan?

Whichever prices better for your dates, because open-jaw construction, into one and home from the other, is usually free on negotiated contracts. Milan often edges Rome on fare thanks to Emirates' JFK nonstop, and it is three hours closer to the Lakes and the Alps; Rome has the broader nonstop schedule.

Can I fly business class nonstop to Venice or Naples?

In summer, yes: seasonal nonstops run roughly May through October from New York, Newark, Philadelphia and Dallas depending on the city. The rest of the year you connect over Rome, Milan or a European hub on a single through-fare, which usually costs less than the summer nonstop anyway.

When is business class to Italy cheapest?

November through March, excluding the Christmas weeks, with fares regularly 40% below summer. Late September and October balance weather and price; June through August carries the year's steepest premiums and wants 12+ weeks of lead time.
